Tips on Getting Coached For many, the idea of getting a coach can be quite scary. Most people don't know what to expect in their initial meeting, and the majority of those are afraid to ask. While still, there are many that believe that coaching is like counseling. I have often heard people say that they don't need a life coach as well, and the truth is, we all need a life coach! The greatest musicians to the best professional athletes have coaches who inspire them to reach their greatest levels. Here are some tips on using your life coach for the best of your advantage!
1. Be honest with your coach. A coach can only provide feedback, and goal setting for what you're telling them. If you are finding that you and your coach are not clicking, let them know! If there is something you feel the coach is not getting, let them know! Life coaching is for you to set your own needs first, without being judged for the way you want your life to be. It is the job of your coach to ask questions of you, and help you set goals and timelines that are attainable for you.
2. Don't expect to change your life is one session. Every once in awhile a client will come to me, hoping that by having a thirty minute consultation will steer them exactly to where they want to be. However, there is no magical solution to creating your life. Life coaching is a commitment that you make to yourself, your coach, and that your coach makes to you. Plan on being with your coach for at least three months to see solid changes in your life.
3. Do your homework. Even before you've met with your life coach for the first time, write down everything that you want to discuss with your coach. This can include goals for the right now, goals for the future and everything in between. Again, be honest with yourself. Once you have signed up for life coaching, follow through with your homework. While you won't be graded on it, completing your homework between each session will help you to guarantee that the changes you want to create will be implemented.
4. Be open to new suggestions. It is the job of your coach to listen to your desires so that you can live the life that you want. In order to do this, your coach will provide insight, feedback and suggestions that you can use to implement these changes. By opening yourself to the suggestions that your coach is giving you, you are widening your range of possibilities, and thus, greater chances of success. This is another great time to be honest. If your coach suggests something to you that goes against your way of life, be sure to tell them!
5. Make your goals completely about you. Quite often, I hear people say they want to change something to please a parent, a spouse, friends or children. When we are living our lives for other people, or making goals for reasons that are not for us, we tend to procrastinate, lose hope, and often give up. If you are wanting to change your life, make sure you are doing it for the right reasons... which means YOU and your goals!
